23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time C

Jesus said that people would know that we are His disciples if we have love. Yet, the Gospel reading today, Jesus clearly states that whoever wishes to come after Him must hate his father and mother, brother and sister, and a whole host of other close people in our lives! What's going on?
