Sometimes in life, we just want to get to "the good part." But what if the stuff before "the good part" is also important? We can often approach Christmas in this way and treat the Advent season as unnecessary, but this season of waiting isn't about "passing time." And we need this time!

A talent is a significant amount of money. It demonstrated the Master's trust in his servants. God has invested quite a bit in us; we should recognize this when we look at our Crucified Lord. No matter how many talents we've been given, God isn't looking for us to produce beyond what we've been given, but we are called to put in the work. We may come up with excuses, but in the end, it matters not. What matters is what we do with the time we've been given, with the skills and the grace He has invested in us.

While things may look bleak, Jesus remains the answer. He is the King. When we live in His dominion and are confident in His abiding truth, we will have the ability not only to resist evil and doubt, but be given the strength to fight back. The Church is filled with sinners, but we are called to go on the offensive and fight for souls, fight to reform the Church, to do that which is necessary for the salvation of our brothers and sisters. Don't abandon the ship. Jesus is King, but it also means He has to be King of everything within us.

In the midst of chaos, a few individuals rise and become heroes. The heroes we need in this world now are saints: those who walk confidently in the power of the Holy Spirit, ready to live the extraordinary in the ordinary.

authentic love, counterfeit, fr. phil ching, greatest commandment, heart, jesus, mind, neighbor, pope francis, soul, strength
Jesus points to two commandments as being the greatest commandment: to love God with your heart, with your soul, and with your mind... and to love your neighbor as yourself. But what does this love look like? And how do we know we are living in that kind of love He calls us to?

caesar, election season, fr. phil ching, image of god, obligation, religious liberty, religious rights, render, voting
“Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God, the things that are God’s” (Mt 22:21). In focusing so much on capturing Jesus, the Pharisees and Herodians miss the most important point: give to God what is His due. We contend enough with concupiscence (the inclination to sin) that we don't need external forces to dissuade us from giving what is due to God. Therefore, during this election season, we as believers must seek to guarantee that our religious rights are protected. No longer can we be passive about our religious liberties being violated.

God the Father is having the greatest wedding feast fit for royalty. And you're invited! But we must chose now that we want to go. The Holy Mass is how we can participate in that Banquet that does not fade away, in which we can receive, not simply foods that satisfy our senses, but the Bread of Life, Jesus, who nourishes us in the very depths of our being: our very souls. We also should be prepared to have our wedding garment, pressed and ready by how we choose to live.

It's not about saying the right thing to avoid embarrassment; what matters is following through with doing what needs to be done, especially when it comes to fulfilling the Father's will.

anger, forgiveness, fr. phil ching, healing, lifeless, meekness, mercy, new identity, numb
It’s easy to ask for mercy; far more difficult to give mercy. Yet people such as Sharletta Evans demonstrates that even in the most unforgivable situations, the grace of God can prevail and provides the power to heal.

The role of the watchman is to tell us of what we need to know of the approaching danger. During the time we live in, the presence of many dangers exist. During this election year, we are called to stand united. As Catholics, Christians, and believers, we must stand together on the issue of life, specifically rising in defense of our preborn brothers and sisters. If the life in the womb is not protected and safeguarded, is it really any wonder why life outside of the womb is treated so carelessly? It is the pre-eminent issue of this election.

Jesus invites us to live in a radical way: to denounce our wants and desires, and to trade them all for the Father's will.

Some claim that Jesus was just a good, moral teacher or a performer of miracles. Yet, if we were to know all of what Jesus said, He left no room for that trite identification. He is the Son of God, the Second Person of the Trinity, the Savior of the world. His life, death, and resurrection is evidence that He is who He says He is. Anything else is patronizing nonsense that must be refuted as it is an offense to Our Blessed Lord to think so little of Him.

It's great to be prepared and know what's ahead of you. It takes most of the fear out of a new venture. Yet sometimes God will call us to take a leap of faith, to trust in Him and not our own understanding.

"Why spend your money for what is not bread; your wages for what fails to satisfy?" How easily we fall for the "song and dance", being lured by what claims to offer fulfillment but fails us in the end. Fr. Phil talks about how our life with Jesus and what we do for our faith will never be a waste of our time.
